Grenade thrown at losing candidate's house in Iloilo

Not even losing candidates are safe from post-election violence, at least in Western Visayas. A losing candidate for councilor discovered this after unidentified men threw a grenade at his house in Iloilo City last weekend. But losing bet Jose Marte Nava was lucky the grenade did not explode at his house in Zone 6 in Calumpang village in Molo, Iloilo City, according to a report on Iloilo news site The News Today (www.thenewstoday.info). The unexploded grenade was discovered at 7 a.m. Saturday at the would-be victim's compound, the report said. A certain Nonoy picked up the grenade, thinking at first that it was just a toy. But when household members saw it, they called in the police. Police found the grenade's safety pin just a few meters away from where the explosive was found. Investigators are not discounting politics as a motive, although they noted Nava was already defeated and was only running for the city council. On the other hand, they noted at least two other Navas had run for the same position in the last election. One of them, Plaridel Nava, managed to hang on the last slot for the city council post. Aside from politics, police investigators are also considering personal grudges as motive of the incident. - RJAB Jr., GMANews.TV
