2 suspected robbers killed in downtown Manila shootout

At least two suspected robbers were killed while one was arrested after a running gunbattle with police in Manila's downtown district early Wednesday morning. Radio dwIZ reported one of the suspects was killed on the spot while another was declared dead at the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center. Police took into custody a third suspect driving the getaway tricycle, even as three other suspects managed to elude arrest. The incident occurred before 7 a.m. along Tomas Mapua Street in Sta. Cruz in Manila, the report said. "Yung dalawa pinutukan kami, nagkaroon ng running gunbattle. Ang isa bumagsak dito (Two of them fired at us, and there was a running gunbattle. One of them was hit and fell)," said a police officer involved in the encounter. A separate report on dzBB radio said the gang had been linked to past holdups in the area, including one last May 11 that victimized a nurse working at the Manila City Hall. Initial investigation showed a police team was making its usual patrol rounds when it chanced on a commotion. Police said one of the suspects fired at them, triggering a running gunbattle. Recovered from the suspects was a sack that contained cellular phones and kikay (vanity) kits, which police believed to be the suspects' loot. Also recovered from the suspects were balisong (switchblades), and improvised handguns.— LBG/RSJ, GMANews.TV
