Indecision cuts short escaped inmate's ‘freedom’

Several moments of indecision cost an Iloilo jail inmate his illicit freedom, shortly after he pulled off a daring escape from his cell Tuesday. Timothy Paul Tubola hailed a tricycle but aroused the driver's suspicions when he repeatedly changed his mind on where he wanted to go. Tubola was detained at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Jaro in Iloilo City for robbery with homicide charges, Iloilo-based news site The News Today reported Wednesday. Investigation showed Tubola sneaked out from the BJMP jail at around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday by scaling at the 25-foot perimeter fence at the back of the facility. He then jumped at the nearby Christ the King Memorial Park and flagged down a passing tricycle. At first, he told the driver to take him to Dungon village in Jaro district, but when they reached the area, he changed his mind and asked to be brought to La Paz district. When they reached La Paz, he again changed his mind and told the tricycle driver to take him to the Rizal area instead. The driver became suspicious and flagged a patrol car of the La Paz Police Station. At the time, police had been alerted about Tubola's escape. After he was rearrested, Tubola told the police the reason for his escape was that he missed his wife and child, adding he would have surrendered after seeing them again. For his part, BJMP district jail warden Superintendent Samson Abaygar said they learned of the escape after a commotion in the jail broke out. Abaygar admitted they allowed some prisoners to go out of their cells at the early hours of the day due to limited water supply. He said he already ordered an investigation into the incident. “Our investigators are trying to determine the liabilities of the duty jailers... if they were remiss in their vigilance in looking after the inmates when the incident happened," he said. — LBG, GMANews.TV
