School opening moved a day later to June 15, DepEd says

The Department of Education announced on Friday that opening of classes in public schools will be moved from June 14 to June 15 to give way for the observance of the Philippines’ Independence Day. In a GMA News Flash Report, Education Secretary Mona Valisno said the opening of classes in public schools was moved to Tuesday since June 14 is a regular holiday. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, through Proclamation No. 1841, earlier moved the commemoration of Philippine Independence Day — originally celebrated on June 12 — to the nearest Monday, June 14. Republic Act 9492 allows the President to move the non-religious holidays to the nearest Monday. However, Valisno clarified in the same report that private schools may opt not to follow the postponement of the opening of classes. - RJAB Jr., GMANews.TV
