Pinoy artist's work to be exhibited in San Fran City Hall


Two art works of a Filipino visual artist have been recently chosen by San Francisco City to be exhibited at the Office of the Supervisors. Chosen to be displayed at the office of District 11 Supervisor John Avalos were were Marconi Calindas’ “Badlands of San Francisco" and “Angels of San Francisco" paintings.

Avalos, during the artists’ reception, said he is an avid fan of vibrant colors and visual art style that depicts some Latin American flavors. “I love colors and I really love [Calindas’] painting," he said. He said Calindas’ paintings have been getting rave reviews from City Hall officials and visitors, and that he is honored to have Calindas’ artwork hanging in his City Hall office wall. Calindas, who was chosen among hundreds of artists by officials of the San Francisco City Hall, was joined by a select few Bay Area artists in this four-month exhibit at the Supervisor’s Offices. The feeling is mutual Calindas said he is likewise honored that Avalos has chosen his artwork. “This is a major accomplishment for a Filipino artist here in the Bay Area. Being recognized by city officials is truly a feather to our caps being Filipino visual artists," he said. The exhibit, curated by San Francisco’s McKinley Arts Solutions Gallery, is in collaboration with the Asian Pacific Islanders Cultural Center. Aside from Avalos, District Supervisors David Chiu, Carmen Chu, Eric Mar and David Campos participated in the exhibit. The show will run until August 2010.

US tour, exhibits Calindas is also set for a US art tour and exhibits with stops at New York City’s Fashion District in July and at the office of Northern Mariana Islands Rep. Gregorio Sablan in the US House of Representatives in Washington D.C. in August. His artworks will also be displayed in Orlando, Florida; Portland, Oregon; San Francisco, Berkeley; Northern Mariana Islands and the US Territory of Guam. He recently held an exhibit in San Jose, California where he also joined six of the city’s top contemporary artists. Calindas’ works were also used for a clothing line called Wear-A-Marconi, which gained prominence in Saipan, Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). He is a renowned CNMI artist and has also produced art designs in US territory of Guam. Calindas’ Wear-A-Marconi clothing line is sold at the DFS Galleria shopping mall in Guam and Saipan. He also plans to introduce his designs in San Francisco and Manila this year. - JVP/KBK, GMANews.TV
