RP netter Patrombon's French Open jr stint ends

Jeson Patrombon's stint in the French Open Junior Championships boys' singles ended on Tuesday when ninth seeded Duilio Beretta of Peru scored a 6-2, 6-7 (7), 6-2 win at Court 11 of the Roland Garros Stadium. Patrombon's loss left Francis Casey Alcantara as the lone Filipino bet campaigning in the boys' doubles of the Grade A event. Alcantara and partner Fil-Am Raymond Sarmiento moved on to the second round after a 6-4, 0-6, 10-4 win against Filip Horansky and Jozef Kovalik of the Slovak Republic. Riding high on his opening round win over Miki Jankovic, Patrombon failed to match his opponent’s intensity and aggressiveness on clay that resulted to an easy win for Beretta, who is 11th in the world junior rankings. Patrombon won the second set by tiebreak but a timeout before the start of the third changed the complexion of the game. Beretta sued for time to relieve himself but more importantly the time out aimed to break Patrombon’s momentum. When play resumed, Beretta regained his composure and quickly won three straight games as Patrombon lost his sting and ran into a spate of unforced errors. Patrombon's coach Manny Tecson said Beretta’s move was intentional in order to disrupt his ward’s momentum. "This is purely gamesmanship but it is within the rules of tennis so I can't do anything to call the attention of the umpire." Patrombon tried to fight back winning the next two games for a 3-2 count but Beretta broke his foes’ serve to complete another three-game swing and end the three-hour long match in the Grade A event. It was Patrombon's fourth tournament on clay that improved his International Tennis Federation (ITF) ranking. He climbed from 46th to 43rd and is expected to enter the Top 30 after his first round victory. Patrombon's last tournament on clay will be the German Open, which is another Grade I event. He then shifts on grass to prepare for the Junior Wimbledon later this month. Alcantara and Sarmiento, who won the doubles crown in the Mitsubishi Lancer International Juniors Tennis Championships held in Manila, will face Carlos Boluda-Purkiss of Spain and Alessandro Colella of Italy in the second round. Purkiss and Colella earned a spot in the second round after eliminating the sixth seeded pair of Mitchell Frank and Junior Ore of the USA, 6-3, 6-3. – JVP, GMANews.TV
