6 Manila dorms ordered closed for safety code violations

Six dormitories in Manila have been ordered closed for various violations in the safety rules and standards set by the city government. Ordered closed were PJ Mansion Inc, Remedios Abia and Stella Chuaquioco Manubay in Sampaloc; Ryan Santos and JT Ladies Bedspacer in Quiapo; and Alera in San Miguel. Re-elected Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim ordered the closure of the six dormitories following the recommendation of City Administrator Jay Marzan, whose office spearheaded an inspection of boarding houses in the city. The violations committed by the said establishments ranged from lack of licenses and permits, and inadequate or lack of fire escape and illuminated directional signs as well as extinguishers and alarm and emergency systems. Some of these establishments were also found to be lacking in sanitary permits both for the establishments and their personnel, some of whom were also found to be working without the required health certificates. The inspection was conducted in connection with the start of classes for college students. Manila houses dozens of colleges and universities, and boarding houses and dormitories serve as temporary shelters for students especially those who live in the provinces. — KBK/RSJ, GMANews.TV
