No Pinoys hurt in Indonesia quakes — report

No Filipino was among the casualties in the four quakes that hit Indonesia Wednesday, Philippine officials there said. A report on dzBB radio early Thursday quoted the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta as saying that there was no report of Filipinos among the dead or injured in the quakes. But the Philippine Embassy assured families of Indonesia-based Filipinos that it is coordinating with authorities to monitor the situation. On Wednesday, the Associated Press reported that a series of powerful earthquakes rattled Indonesia, killing at least three people, triggering landslides and demolishing dozens of homes. A tsunami warning sent panicked residents fleeing buildings to high ground, the AP report said. The warning was later lifted. The AP report, quoting the US Geological Survey website, said the 7.0 magnitude quake was centered 18 miles (29 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor and 125 miles (195 kilometers) off the northern coast of Papua province. It was accompanied by a series of strong aftershocks, the highest measuring 6.4. — with a report from Associated Press/RSJ, GMANews.TV
