Bishop suggests ex-Comelec chief for DAR

A Catholic bishop is endorsing former Commission on Elections chairman Christian Monsod for the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR). “Our appeal is for Aquino to appoint someone worthy as DAR secretary. And I’m suggesting for Atty. Monsod because he knows a lot about the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Pprogram (CARP) and he has a heart for the farmers," Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo said an article posted on the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines news site. Pabillo said Monsod as the DAR chief is only a suggestion for President-elect Benigno Siemeon “Noynoy" Aquino III to consider. “We are also citizens of this country. After all, we are not imposing something here. We are just giving suggestions to the incoming administration," he said, adding that Monsod is knowledgeable enough to handle such post and to implement reforms in the agrarian sector. Pabillo added Monsod is active in efforts to avert climate change and Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program extension with reforms (CARPer). Pabillo chairs the CBCP’s Episcopal Commission on Social Action-Justice and Peace. For his part, former CBCP president and Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo called on President-elect Benigno Simeon “Noynoy" Aquino III to continue the implementation of the agrarian reform law. “Let us hope that there will be a good spirit in the implementation of the CARP law, this law is for the farmers," he said. — LBG, GMANews.TV
