Title win remains elusive for Patrombon in Europe

Jeson Patrombon remains unlucky in his European swing as his bid for a major victory continues to evade him this year. Patrombon, 17, and 16-year-old American teammate Mitchell Krueger failed in their attempt to claim the boys’ doubles crown in the 11th Gerry Weber Junior Open in Hale Germany. The unseeded pair suffered a 6-3, 6-1 defeat to second seeds Dominic Thiem of Austria and local bet Mathias Wunner. Thiem, 12th in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior rankings, and his 57th ranked partner Wunner displayed poise the entire match banking on their veteran smarts to counter the aggressive play by Patrombon (37) and Krueger (79). This was Patrombon’s first finals match in a doubles event this year. He played in the title match of the Japan Open singles last April but lost to Japan’s Rikuto Furuta in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Patrombon’s next tournament is the ITF Grade 1 event AEGON Junior International-Roehampton from June 20 to 25 where top junior netter Jason Kubler of Australia enjoys the No. 1 seeding. Other Top 10 players seeing action at the Bank of England Sports Ground are Tiago Fernandez of Brazil (No. 3), American Dennis Kudla (No. 7) and Argentina’s Renzo Olivo (No. 10). Patrombon is also entered in the main draw of the Wimbledon Junior Championship slated from June 26 to July 4. – JVP, GMANews.TV
