Faulty NAIA equipment replaced, says CAAP official

Aviation authorities on Sunday replaced the faulty navigational equipment that stalled domestic and international flights at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Saturday. Lito Casaul, technical assistant of Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines head Alfonso Cusi, said the Very High Frequency Omni-Directional Radio Range (VOR) — a device that directs aircraft to the runway especially when there is poor visibility — has been installed at the airport. The equipment, used by the Subic International Airport, was transferred to the NAIA in Metro Manila, and installed at Runway 06-24. The CAAP had configured the VOR to match the radio frequencies of incoming aircraft. Two Philippine Airlines flights landed Sunday morning to test the equipment, the CAAP said. At least 50 domestic and international flights were canceled on Saturday after NAIA’s VOR broke down. Normal operations have reportedly resumed at the airport as of this posting.
