Comelec moves registration for SK, barangay polls

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has moved the registration dates for the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls to mid-July and for the barangay polls to early August, a poll official said Tuesday. Comelec Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal said the registration dates for the SK elections will be from July 15 to July 25, while for the barangay elections, from August 1 to August 10. The SK and barangay elections have been tentatively set on October 25. The poll body had earlier announced that the registration period for the October elections would be from July 1 to 31. But Larrazabal said they decided to separate the registration dates because in the SK polls, biometrics is not needed. On the other hand, the registration for barangay polls requires voter biometrics because it will be merged with the poll body's database of regular voters. A registrant for the SK polls has to be a Filipino citizen, a resident of the Barangay for six months, and must 15 to 17 years of age. Same voter qualifications are needed for the Barangay polls, except that voters should be at least 18 years old. Registrants for both elections need to present valid IDs during registration, said Larrazabal. Larrazabal said they would hold an Election Registration Board hearing on July 12 to cancel double or multiple registrants and those who have not voted for two successive elections. Meanwhile, he said the poll body has yet to decide whether to automate the October polls. "This has to be discussed thoroughly by the [Comelec] en banc." Larrazabal, however, said they are preparing for manual elections even though they would prefer to use the same ballots used in the May automated polls. "Based on the feedback, they liked the method (of shading)... we'll see if we can still implement this," he said. — LBG/KBK, GMANews.TV
