After 9 deaths in Cavite, another road crash kills 2 in Laguna

Two truck drivers were killed after their vehicles figured in a head-on collision in Laguna province before dawn Wednesday, two hours after a road crash killed nine people in neighboring Cavite province. Senior Police Officer 3 Zaldy Miran of the Sta. Rosa City police said the incident occurred between 3 and 3:30 a.m. near the Sta. Rosa Baptist Church. "Umiwas (ang isang driver) sa van at may nakasalubong na trak (One of the drivers tried to avoid hitting a van and ended up colliding head-on with another truck)," Miran said on dzBB radio. The fatalities were identified as Alfredo Andaya and Alfonso Guevarra, who were both killed on the spot, a separate report on dzXL radio said. Initial investigation showed Andaya's cargo truck had just overtaken a jeep when it collided head-on with the trailer truck driven by Guevarra. The impact was so strong that both trucks were thrown to the side of the road. Both trucks' helpers were injured and rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. They were not immediately identified. Miran said traffic built up in the area as authorities had a difficult time removing the trailer trucks from the site. One of the trailers was loaded with corn while the other was heading for Isabela province, Miran added. Earlier in Cavite province, at least nine people, one of them a two-year-old child were killed after a truck delivering liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) plowed into an eatery around 1 a.m. [See: 9 killed, 1 hurt in fiery road accident in Cavite] Wednesday's incidents were the latest in a series of deadly road crashes in Luzon and Visayas.
