Politics eyed in attack on Maguindanao mayor

Police in Mindanao are investigating politics as a motive in an ambush that wounded an outgoing town mayor of Maguindanao province Monday. Radio dzBB reported early Tuesday that police in Cotabato City are still gathering leads on who shot and wounded Sultan Sumagka (formerly Talitay) town mayor Cabili Sumagka. Cotabato City police head Senior Superintendent Willie Dangane said Sumagka and his party were heading for Cotabato City in a pickup when they were attacked. A separate report on dzXL radio said the ambush occurred at 12:45 p.m. Monday, where the mayor was hit in the stomach. The bullet exited through the side of his body. Sumagka was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Recovered from the crime scene were two shells of a cal-.45 pistol. — RSJ/LBG, GMANews.TV
