Comelec eyes voter education in high school, college curricula

The Commission on Elections said Thursday that it plans to incorporate voter education into the curricula of high school and college students. This would educate the public more about the elections, the commission said. Comelec Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal said that he had met with newly appointed Education Secretary Armin Luistro during the inauguration Wednesday of President Benigno Simeon Aquino III and briefly discussed the matter. "What we're looking at is how we can have a greater reach. This will strengthen voter education and the electoral process as a whole... This will assist the Comelec in future elections," he told reporters in an interview Thursday. What needs a more thorough discussion is how to implement the project, according to him. "We will be meeting with (Luistro) and (the) Commission on Higher Education in the coming days to discuss how we intend to do this," Larrazabal said. The plan was to create a module and incorporate it into the college and high school. He said that the module would be taught in a single day for the whole school year. "We'll take the lead... We will be providing them [with] materials, which they can put in the libraries of their schools, [but] the implementation will be done by DepEd and CHED," he said. Courses related to elections are already taught in a number of countries, specifically in the United States, Larrazabal said. "That will [also] strengthen the relationship between Comelec and [the DepEd and CHED]," he said. The Comelec held the country's first nationwide automated elections on May 10, and would be holding the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections next Oct. 25. —VS, GMANews.TV
