250,000 passengers took LRT Line 2 on Friday

About quarter of a million passengers took the Light Rail Transit Line 2 on Friday — the most number of people recorded to have taken the Recto-Santolan line in a single day since it started operating in 2003. In a statement, Administrator Melquiades Robles of the LRT Authority said that 249,085 passengers took the LRT Line 2 train on July 2, which was 3.3-percent higher than its previous record of 241,125 on Dec. 4, 2009. "This shows that commuters are maturing. More people are leaving their cars and taking the train," Robles said. "Taking the LRT trains are also more comfortable and convenient," he said. Robles said there was still no need to field more trains even during peak hours. At over 240,000 passengers daily, only about 35 percent of the train's over 700,000-person capacity was being used up, Robles added. From January to June, the LRT Line 2 had a daily average of 193,284 passengers, with 12 trains running during peak hours. At full capacity, the LRT Line 2 could manage 16 trains running at the same time. Line 2 is the country’s least used overhead train system. The two others, the LRT Line 1 (Baclaran-Balintawak) and the Metro Rail Transit (Edsa), carry about a million passengers combined. —Jesse Edep/VS, GMANews.TV
