Coast Guard sends team to check oil spill in Batangas

The Philippine Coast Guard sent a team to a mangrove area in Batangas province early Tuesday to check reports of an oil spill there. Radio dwIZ reported that the Coast Guard deployed a Marine Environmental Protection Command team to the oil spill site in Talibayog village in Calatagan town. Citing initial reports reaching him, Coast Guard commandant Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo said the oil spill had an area coverage of 80 by 12 meters as of 8 a.m. Tuesday. He ordered the team to investigate reports that four vessels were seen in the area shortly before the oil spill occurred. The team sent to the site brought with it an oil spill boom to prevent the oil from contaminating the environment. Calatagan is a second-class town in Batangas, with a population of 51,544 people in 9,201 households. — LBG/RSJ, GMANews.TV
