New Customs chief: No special favors for logistics firm that employed me

No special favors will be given to a logistics company that previously employed him, newly-appointed Bureau of Customs (BOC) Commissioner Angelito Alvarez said. It will even "a disadvantage," said Alvarez, a former President of Air21, a partner of FedEx in the Philippines. "Since I am closely associated with Air21 and FedEx, this will even pose as a disadvantage on these two companies because all eyes will be on us," he said at the sidelines of the turnover ceremony on Wednesday. “If I give preferential treatment to these two companies, I’m sure the industry would create a big howl so it will be a disadvantage for them," he added. Alvarez resigned as President and Chief Operating Officer of Air 21, whose services include delivery and Customs clearance. Alvarez’s priorities now include improving the bureau’s revenue collection and plugging leaks due to smuggling and corruption. "It's time to make meritocracy work and lessen influence peddling system," he said. "There are some measures that will take a little while for us to accomplish, and that's given. It is an impossible task to curb corruption in the bureau...but this is the challenge I will be facing and I will assure that the quality of governance under my administration will be a lot better," Alvarez said. Under his watch, Alvarez will also institutionalize a lifestyle check on every employee, a move that will help improve the BOC’s image and restore its public trust. - RJAB Jr., GMANews.TV
