Report: Authorities raise red tide alert for Sorsogon Bay

Authorities cautioned residents near Sorsogon Bay in Bicol Saturday against catching and eating shellfish there, after the water tested positive for red tide toxins. Radio dzXL reported the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said the red tide toxins reappeared after three months. The report quoted BFAR Chief Health Officer Elvie Mura as saying this was due to the hot dry spell in the region. On the other hand, the BFAR website, whose last shellfish bulletin was dated June 25, indicated mussels, clams, scallops and oysters should not be harvested, eaten, bought or sold from areas with red tide toxins. Considered safe to harvest, eat, buy and sell are fish, squid, crab and shrimp. — LBG, GMANews.TV
