Osmeña: Customs chief's appointment should be revoked if he cheated in golf

President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III should revoke the appointment of Customs Commissioner Angelito Alvarez if he really did cheat in a golf tournament, Senator Senator Sergio "Serge" Osmeña III said Monday. The President should investigate the matter since his credibility is at stake because he had appointed Alvarez to the Bureau of Customs, Osmeña said in an interview with reporters. "Honesty is a very important criteria for any appointment, much more for Customs. Mawawala ang credibility ni Noynoy (His credibility might be tarnished)," he said. Alvarez, along with three other golfers, is being accused of cheating during the Mango Tee member-guest tournament held at the Alabang Golf and Country Club last February. He has since been suspended from the club. However, the Customs chief brushed it off and asked the public to concentrate on the work he plans to do. But Osmeña said that if he really did "cheat" on a game, he is worried about what other things he is capable of doing. "Remember the saying in the bible: how can you be honest in big things when you can't be honest in little things," he said. However, the senator did not blame Aquino for appointing Alvarez. "Nagmamadali sila... naiipit rin ang appointments. Kawawa rin siya, let's give him a little slack, tingnan po natin paano niya aayusin ang problema niya (They were in a hurry, the appointments were done in haste. But let's give him some slack, let's see first what he'll do to fix the problem)," he said. The President was given from his proclamation until June 30, his inauguration, to name the members of his Cabinet and other appointees. - Kimberly Jane T. Tan, RJAB Jr., GMANews.TV
