Marksman PNoy wants stiffer illegal gun possession penalties

President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, a known marksman, said Monday he intends to push for stiffer penalties for illegal gun possession. Aquino is said to be a sharp shooter. The only other president known to have been a marksman was the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos, who belonged to the University of the Philippines rifle team. In an ambush interview after inaugurating the new buildings of the Philippine National Police (PNP) School of Values and Leadership in Subic, Zambales, Aquino said he agrees "in general" that there should be stiffer penalties for illegal gun possession. He said he has asked PNP Dir. Gen. Jesus Verzosa to review the processes involved in possessing firearms. "Meron bang looseness sa implementation ng pertinent rules and regulations? (Is there a 'looseness in the implementation of pertinent rules and regulations?)" said the president. "At the end of the day it is not a right under our laws, it's a privilege, and there are certain conditions you have to meet to be able to be granted the license," Aquino said. –VVP, GMANews.TV
