SRA to hold tender for 150,000 MT imported sugar

The Sugar Regulatory Administration plans to hold a tender for the importation of 150,000 metric tons of sugar next week. The agency could schedule the tender anytime between July 26 and 28, said SRA Administrator Bernardo Trebol. "In principle, the importation is already approved. We will try to speed things up," said Trebol. He said the additional sugar imports are expected to arrive in the Philippines by Sept. 30. Archimedes Amarra, executive director of the Philippine Sugar Millers Association Inc., said the SRA and the National Food Authority will meet July 20 to discuss the guidelines for importation. "The ground rules must be finalized by the NFA and the SRA. This is a pre-requisite to having the tax expenditure subsidy approved by the Finance department," said Amarra. The shipment is expected to raise the country's sugar supply and prevent price spikes with the expected delay in the milling season for crop year ending Aug. 31 because of low quality sugarcane. —JE/VS, GMANews.TV
