NDCC: 'Basyang' leaves 76 dead, 72 still missing

While another weather disturbance was moving away from the country, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) reported Tuesday that the death toll from Typhoon Basyang has risen to 76, while 72 have remained missing. Cyclone “Caloy" (chanthu), which passed the country Monday, did not cause as much damage as Basyang. In its 6 a.m. report, the NDCC said that Basyang’s death toll already hit 76 Tuesday morning. Of the number, 43 were from Southern Luzon, 18 from Bicol and 15 from Central Visayas. Some 72 remained missing, including 31 in Southern Luzon, 34 in Bicol, six in Central Luzon, and one in Western Visayas. At least 31 were injured, 24 of them in Southern Luzon. Estimated damage to property remained at P189.573 million. At least 48,640 families or 241,651 people in 709 villages in 13 cities and 88 towns in 12 provinces were affected. A total of 465 families or 2,365 people were housed in 15 evacuation centers as of Tuesday morning. Only one lane of the Tayabas-Mainit-Mauban Road was passable due to road slip. — LBG/RSJ, GMANews.TV
