Suspected rebels kill 2 soldiers in Batangas ambush

Two soldiers were killed Wednesday in a surprise attack by suspected members of the New People’s Army in Batangas province, a local military official said. The rebels shot dead Privates Dennis Fajelga and Hinkil Carasco while the two were driving their motorcycles in Barangay Lucshi in Calatagan town past 11 a.m., Col. Aurelio Balabad of the Philippine Army’s 202nd Infantry brigade said. According to Balabad, the soldiers were working for outreach projects in the area, and that at the time of the attack they were wearing civilian clothes after coming from the market. “They [the suspected NPA members] just fired at them. Walang laban. We incurred casualty but this will not deter us from continuing the good things we are doing in Calatagan," he said. Just last month, a soldier was killed and two others were hurt in a similar ambush by suspected NPA rebels in Batangas. The soldiers, also community workers, were likewise in civilian clothes and riding motorcycles in nearby Calaca town when they were attacked. Pursuit operations are on to track down the suspects, Balabad said. — with a report by Andreo Calonzo/LBG/KBK, GMANews.TV
