Report: Ilocos fisherman dies after swallowing fish alive

A live fish meant death to a fisherman, who died after swallowing it in a freak accident in Ilocos Sur province. Radio dzXL reported that Edward Canas, 21, died after the fish, which was described as being no bigger than a finger, got stuck in his throat. Canas was a resident of Apatot village in San Esteban town. Edward's mother Pia said she felt something was wrong when he failed to return home on time on Thrusday. She learned later he was on the shore, having difficulty breathing. Local residents tried to pull the fish out of Edward's throat but failed. They brought him to a hospital but he died before doctors attend to him. One of his colleagues said he may have swallowed a "kurapo" fish, which fishermen bite in the head after the catch to kill it. — LBG, GMANews.TV
