Miriam on indefinite leave from Senate

Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago will not be attending Senate session in the coming days. This was after the feisty lawmaker, who was re-elected in the May 10 automated elections, filed an indefinite leave of absence from the Senate due to health reasons. Santiago, who has yet to attend a single session of the 15th Congress, told Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile in a letter that she will be on sick leave for an indefinite period of time. She has also requested Enrile to forward any urgent official communication to her satellite office in Quezon City instead of her home. Santiago had already taken an indefinite leave of absence before, citing complications from arrhythmia or abnormal heart rate and rhythm. Santiago had previously said that her doctors had told her that the disorder could lead to complications like stroke and that she might eventually need a pacemaker to regulate her heartbeat. The lawmaker said two of her younger brothers had died of arrhythmia. Senate Majority Floor Leader Vicente "Tito" Sotto III on Wednesday said Santiago has yet to express her intention to join the majority or the minority in the Senate. The chamber has yet to finalize the committee chairmanships. - Kimberly Jane Tan/KBK, GMANews.TV
