Yellow-flowering trees planted on Times St. to honor Cory

Yellow-flowering trees were planted on Friday in front of the Aquino residence on Times Street in Quezon City as part of the commemoration of the late President Corazon Aquino’s first death anniversary. Aurora Corazon “Pinky" Abellada, one of Mrs. Aquino’s four daughters, led the tree-planting ceremony attended by yellow-clad relatives and supporters of the late President, who has become a global democracy icon.
“In memory of Mom, we planted these trees. I think it’s also good for the environment," Abellada told reporters after the tree-planting ceremony on Friday. She added that the group chose yellow-flowering trees to be planted at the entrance of their Quezon City residence since yellow is the late President’s trademark color. Mrs. Aquino succumbed to colon cancer on August 1 last year, which triggered a public outpouring of sympathy and renewed movement for reforms, which would later catapult her only son, Benigno “Noynoy" Aquino III to the presidency. Abellada said she could not help but reminisce the last few days of her mother now that her first death anniversary draws near. “Noong nagso-SONA [State of the Nation Address] si Noynoy, iniimagine ko, ‘Wow, Presidente na ang kapatid ko.’ Pero this time last year, talagang hirap na hirap na ang Mom noon," she said. (When Noynoy was delivering his SONA, I was imagining, “Wow, my brother is now President." But this time last year, Mom was really in dire condition.) She likewise thanked Filipinos who continue to remember her mother. “Super nakakamiss talaga. Sobrang pasasalamat. Sana hindi niyo siya makalimutan (We really, sorely miss her. Our utmost thanks, and hope you don’t forget her)," she said. The Aquino family is also scheduled to gather at a Mass at La Salle Greenhills in Mandaluyong City on Sunday to commemorate Mrs. Aquino’s death anniversary.
