8,200 families affected by Maguindanao floods

At least 8,200 families remain troubled by floods caused by continuous heavy rains in Sultan Kudarat town in Maguindanao province since Thursday. The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said that as of 5 p.m. Saturday, 10 villages were troubled by floods, waist-deep in some areas. "Some areas are waist-deep underwater in Barangays Bulalo, Calsada and Katuli," NDCC said in its 5 p.m. Saturday update, posted on its website early Sunday. It said there were 1,500 affected families in Bulalo, 1,500 in Calsada, and 800 in Katuli. Other affected villages include Salimbao with 1,000 families; Banubo with 600; Limbo with 1,500; Gang with 500; Macaguiling with 100; Mulaog with 500; and Senditan with 200. "Knee-deep floodwaters on some 200 meters portion of the national highway covering Barangays Salimbao and Limbo are still causing heavy traffic to all types of vehicles," the NDCC said. But the NDCC said there was no report of casualties and no major evacuation, although 20 families or 200 people sought temporary refuge on higher grounds in Bulalo, Salimbao and Limbo. On the other hand, cloudy weather with high chances of heavy rains remains over the town and other parts of Maguindanao and North Cotabato provinces, including Alamada, Libungan, Midsayap and Picgawayan and in Cotabato City. Flooding started at Sultan Kudarat town at 10 p.m. Thursday due to the overflowing of Simuay River following heavy rains. Emergency units from the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Maguindanao and Cotabato City are on standby for major evacuation and search-and-rescue operations.— LBG, GMANews.TV
