Phivolcs: Magnitude-5 quake rocks Davao Oriental


A magnitude-5 quake rocked the Davao area in Mindanao Wednesday morning, even as state seismologists said no casualty was expected. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake was recorded at 8:43 a.m., and was tectonic in origin. It said the epicenter was 55 km east of Mati in Davao Oriental. The quake was felt at Intensity III in Taragona, Davao Oriental, even as Phivolcs said no damage or aftershock was expected. For its part, the United States Geological Survey said the quake measured at magnitude 5.1, with the epicenter at 155 km east southeast of Davao, 200 km south southeast of Hinatuan, 210 km east-northeast of General Santos, or 1,095 km southeast of Manila. — RSJ, GMANews.TV
