UST singers top choral competition in Spain

Singers from the University of Santo Tomas (UST) brought prestige to the Philippines after bagging the top prize in an international competition in Spain. The Department of Foreign Affairs said the UST Singers topped the 56th Habanera and Polyphony Choral Competition that was held from July 23 to 30 in Torrevieja. "In addition to bagging the top prize, the UST Singers led by Professor Fidel G. Calalang, Jr. also won two other major prizes during the competition - the Intercontinental Award, which is awarded to the chorale group that received the highest marks during the competition, and the Public Choice Award," the DFA said, citing a report from the Philippine Embassy in Spain. It said Filipino music lovers from all over Spain, including a delegation composed of Filipino residents from Torrevieja, went to the competition in droves to cheer on and lend moral support to the UST Singers. The Habanera and Polyphony Competition in Torrevieja capped the group's successful four-month international tour. The tour had taken them to Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Spain, South Korea and the United Kingdom.
