Lawyers want gay marriages allowed soon in California

SAN FRANCISCO – The lawyers who convinced a federal judge to overturn California's gay marriage ban are now urging him to immediately allow same-sex couples to wed. The attorneys filed their motion Friday and were joined by the city of San Francisco, another plaintiff in the lawsuit that led US District Court Judge Vaughn Walker to rule Proposition 8 was unconstitutional. Similar motions were filed earlier in the day by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown. Lawyers defending the voter-approved law asked Walker to keep the gay marriage ban in place while they appeal the case to a higher court. The judge agreed to do so temporarily and set a Friday deadline for plaintiffs to submit their arguments. — AP
