'Ester' strengthens as it moves away from RP

Tropical Storm Ester intensified further as it continued to move toward Japan Monday morning, but will still bring rains on parts of the country, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said. As of 4 a.m. Monday, Pagasa said Ester was 530 km northeast of Basco, Batanes with maximum winds of 85 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 100 kph.

"Tropical Storm 'Ester' will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains over Luzon and Western Visayas and the coastal waters over these areas will be rough and dangerous to small seacrafts and fishing boats," PAGASA said in its 5 a.m. advisory. The weather bureau said Ester was moving north northeast at 15 kph and is expected to be 640 km north northeast of Basco, Batanes or 180 km west of Okinawa, Japan Monday afternoon. Still under Storm Signal No. 1 is the Batanes Group of Islands. Pagasa advised residents in low-lying and mountainous areas there, and areas over the western sections of Luzon and Visayas to be alert against possible flash floods and landslides. — RSJ, GMANews.TV
