45 stray dogs in Kidapawan killed by 'tambucho gassing'

KIDAPAWAN CITY —Some 45 stray dogs in this city were killed Wednesday after their owners failed to claim them during a prescribed seven-day period, a city veterinarian said. The stray dogs were executed by gassing, also called “tambucho (vehicle exhaust) gassing," said Dr. Eugene Gornez, a city veterinarian. The animals were rounded up from major streets and subdivisions by the government veterinarians last week, Gornez said. The high number of reported dog attacks on humans in North Cotabato has prompted the authorities to launch a massive anti-stray dog campaign throughout the province. Since the campaign started last year, an estimated 1,500 dogs have been killed through tambucho gassing despite the appeal of veterinarians to pet owners not to let their dogs wander unattended in the streets. The remains of the dogs are buried in a one-hectare lot beside the Office of the City Veterinarian in Barangay Magsaysay, Kidapawan City. Animal welfare activists led by the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), have asked Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala to rescind the administrative order legitimizing tambucho gassing as a form of “dog euthanasia." PAWS said tambucho gassing is a form of animal cruelty. In this method, the dogs are killed through carbon monoxide poisoning. The dogs are kept in a small chamber filled with vehicle exhaust fumes which contain carbon monoxide. –VVP, GMANews.TV
