2 killed, 6 downed by fish dish in Cebu

At least two people were killed while six were hospitalized after eating a "butete" (puffer fish) dish in Cebu province Tuesday night. Radio dzBB's Cebu affiliate reported Wednesday local authorities suspect the food poisoning may have stemmed from improper preparation of the dish. The incident occurred in Santander town, where the victims and their neighbors partook of the dish at a drinking spree. Killed were Rolando Tano, 48; and Alejandro Cuerpo, 51. Tano's daughter Irene, 19, who is three months pregnant, was in critical condition. Also hospitalized were Luigi Tano, 13; and neighbors Salvador Base, 48; Baldomero Base, 69; Raymond Base, 16; and Alvin Cuepo, 28. An initial investigation showed the victims partook of the dish during a drinking spree, but later vomited and complained of stomach pains and dizziness. Local authorities suspect the cook may have included the fish's innards in preparing the dish. — LBG/RSJ, GMANews.TV
