Palace to MMDA: Penalize any traffic violator, even Kris

Malacañang on Friday told the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to penalize anyone who violates traffic rules — even if she is celebrity Kris Aquino, the youngest sister of President Benigno Aquino III. "Let me tell the MMDA officials, all the officials concerned, walang kinikilingan ang pamahalaang ito. Kung sino man ang nagkasala, tiketan po ninyo (This government does not favor anyone. Whoever committed a violation, issue a ticket)," presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said in a press briefing. Lacierda made the statement after it was reported that Kris' driver violated the law by double parking in Quezon City. According to a Yahoo! Philippines report, Kris herself admitted in her noontime show that the MMDA refused to issue a ticket, even as she reminded her driver to request for a ticket. Lacierda told the MMDA, "Do not be afraid, even if it's related to the president or related to any Cabinet secretaries or the Cabinet secretaries themselves." "You apply the law without fear or favor," added the Palace spokesman. President Aquino is known for obediently following traffic rules and does not use sirens (wang-wang) when traveling even though he is allowed to by law. In his inaugural address, he promised to end the abuse of sirens on the road, a campaign that traffic officials said turned out successful. Lacierda said Friday afternoon that the MMDA later clarified that a ticket was issued to Kris's driver.—Jam L. Sisante/JV, GMANews.TV
