Yap eyes long-term contract with SMC franchise

This time James Yap is looking for a long-term contract with the franchise he steered to two PBA championships in the past, including the last Philippine Cup. The 28-year-old shooting guard out of University of the East admitted he’s seeking at least a five-year extension worth P21 million when his contract with his old team now known as Petron expires in September. Negotiations for a new contract began Friday, just two days after Yap won his second league Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. "Gusto ko sana five years (I want a five-year contract)," said Yap, a native of Escalante, Negros Occidental. "Puro informal lang naman ang pag-uusap namin ni chairman Rene Pardo (PBA chairman Rene Pardo and I had informal talks)," said Yap. “I just hope I can get a longer contract." Selected second overall by Purefoods in the 2004 Draft, Yap has never played for any other PBA team. In six years with the San Miguel franchise, Yap has led the team to four finals appearances where they won two championships – the 2005-06 and 2009-10 Philippine Cups. He also won his first MVP title during his sophomore season in 2005-06. – JVP, GMANews.TV
