Negros lawmaker says he’s working even when he’s absent

Negros Occidental Rep. Julio Ledesma on Tuesday insisted that he is still doing his duty as a lawmaker even if he is not seen in the plenaries of the House of Representatives. “It is just like if you are in an official trip, you can still be present and not on the floor. I am in the House... if my presence is required on the floor, I will be on the floor," he told reporters. “I’ve been in the office, conducting my work from the office here in the House," short-sleeved polo barong-clad Ledesma clarified. The lawmaker also said he is set to change his clothes, as a short-sleeved polo shirt is not considered as an appropriate wear in the plenary. However, records show that since the 15th Congress started, the Negros Occidental lawmaker attended only one session.
He said he went to the plenary Tuesday because he wanted to show himself after hearing talk about his absence. Ledesma, who is set to head the committee on science and technology, said he is now busy putting up his office. He is also set to meet with Speaker Feliciano Belmonte later in the day. The lawmaker vowed to be more visible in the sessions and committee hearings now. He said he was not active in the 14th Congress because he was not given any assignments. “Give me an assignment. I will comply. Ako pa (You know me). If I’m given an assignment, I will work to the best of my ability..." Valenzuela Rep. Rex Gatchalian defended his partymate, saying Ledesma is taking his legislative responsibilities seriously. “And his constituents appreciate the fact…the mere fact he was re-elected last May. He will use his technical expertise this 15th Congress to mold Science and Technology policies for our countrymen," he said in a text message.—Amita O. Legaspi/JV, GMANews.TV
