James Yap set to sign new 3-year deal with Llamados

It’s not exactly the term of contract James Yap is hoping for from B-Meg Derby Ace. But the loyal soldier that he is, the reigning PBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) is not complaining. At the most, the Llamados franchise is only set to offer a three-year contract to its star player. As per regulation of the league, teams are only allowed to present a period of three years as maximum contract period. Shortly after winning his second MVP title, Yap didn’t conceal his desire to get a five-year deal with the only team he has ever played so far in Asia’s first ever play-for-pay league. Yap’s current contract is set to expire next month. “That’s okay with me. A three-year contract is fine," said the 28-year old B-Meg superstar, who will be leaving for the U.S. this weekend for a much-needed break. Yap was scheduled to sit down with Derby Ace board representative and current PBA chairman Rene Pardo to talk about the contract extension, but the meeting failed to push through. But Pardo made it clear the three-year contract the team is going to offer to Yap will eventually be stretched to five years as the former shooting guard from University of the East has an option to re-negotiate for an extension of two years at the end of his second year. Pardo told Yap that `we’ll settle this once he returns.’ The PBA chairman also made it known that no matter what happens, B-Meg is keen on keeping `Big Game James’ on its roster. “He’s non-negotiable," said Pardo. With James Yap a shoo-in of signing up, Derby Ace is already guaranteed of having back two players from last year’s Philippine Cup champion team, who had expiring contracts Roger Yap was the first to agree to a new deal with the Llamados, signing up for a two-year contract. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Other players that are still to be signed up are Paul Artadi, Don Allado, Rafi Reavis, Romel Adducul, Jonathan Fernandez and Chris Timberlake. Newly-appointed B-Meg Derby Ace coach Jorge Gallent told GMANews.TV that he requested to the management to have all seven players with expiring contracts be re-signed. “The Rookie Draft is not as deep as the previous drafts, so the best way for us to be competitive is to have an intact lineup," said Gallent in a telephone interview. - RCJ, GMANews.TV
