UAAP: Tamaraws run roughshod over Fighting Maroons

Already assured of a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four, Far Eastern University used its game against University of the Philippines as a fitting workout. The Tamaraws ran roughshod over the Fighting Maroons, 70-48, Sunday in a match billed as a glorified scrimmage in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum. FEU trailed, 7-8, at the end of the opening canto, but soon went on a 17-0 rampage in a five-minute stretch to turn a close encounter into a rout. There was no looking back for the Tamaraws from there as they easily coasted to their 11th win in 13 matches. The Tamaraws will cap their elims campaign against the Ateneo Blue Eagles on Saturday in what could be a preview of the finals. "It's really tough playing in a game like this where nothing is at stake and your players are thinking of getting those individual awards," said Capacio. "Those were the reasons why we were getting out of our system." "They were tight and we're thinking of scoring. That's not our system because we rely more on moving the ball around," he added. "We can't play the same way against Ateneo." RR Garcia, the frontrunner for the coveted Most Valuable Player award, finished with 12 points, three rebounds and three assists to become the lone double-digit scorer for FEU. But the second unit stepped up big for the Tamaraws led by Gryann Mendoza and Anton Bringas, who combined for 15 points while Cameroonian Pipo Noundou chipped in eight points and eight boards. "It's not just the starters who need to play big and we're glad that some of our teammates we're able to step up," Garcia said. Alvin Padilla top scored for UP with 17 points while center Magi Sison registered a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds along with four blocks. The Diliman-based cagers fell to a dismal 0-13 slate, just a loss away from matching the 0-14 record they posted in 2007. - RCJ, GMANews.TV
