Dead man's 'wink' haunts neighbors

A neighborhood in Bacolod City in Negros Occidental is still shocked over the story of a winking dead man in their community. The news site Visayan Daily Star on Tuesday reported that the mother of the late Rogie Concepcion, 27, winked at her at the public cemetery of Barangay Handumanan in Bacolod City. The report quoted Mrs. Concepcion as saying she was hugging her son’s coffin before it was buried, when she saw him winking at her. Rogie’s cousin May Ann Torda, who was near the coffin, also claimed that she saw her cousin's face move. “We were shocked, but we were not frightened because we were expecting him to open his eyes," Torda said. City medico-legal Officer Ely Cong said such claims may be true as the muscles on Rogie’s face may have contracted due to decomposition. Rogie's mother, on the other hand, said she believes it was her son’s way of reminding them to continue seeking justice for his untimely death. Rogie died, while his companion Jovanie Antaran, 27, was injured when they were ganged upon and stabbed by several men following a verbal tussle at a bar in Brgy. Handumanan on August 28. –VVP, GMANews.TV
