Mamiit, Huey keep Philippines in Group 1 of Asia Oceania netfest

The Philippines will stay competing in the Asia Oceania Zone Group I of the Davis Cup. This after Fil-Ams Cecil Mamiit and Treat Conrad Huey completed the country’s come-from-behind 3-2 win over their Korean counterparts Sunday at the Chanwon Municipal Tennis Center, in Changwon, Korea. The Philippines, which lost its first two matches after our top netters dropped their opening singles assignments, completed the comeback after Mamiit and Huey won both their singles and doubles matches. Mamiit got the needed break in his match against Korean ace netter Lim Yong-kyu for a 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 1-1 (ret). Huey, on the other hand, dominated his counterpart, rookie Jeong Suk-young, 7-5, 7-5, 6-3. The 3-2 victory in the best-of-five tie enabled the Philippines of continuous participation in Group 1 in 2011. "Our campaign to the World Group of the Davis Cup is alive again," said team manager Jean Henri Lhuilllier. Earlier, Mamiit teamed up with Huey in a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, victory over the pair of Kim Hyun-joon and Seol Jae-min. Using their experience to the hilt, Mamiit and Huey flexed their muscles over their younger counterparts. The Fil-Am duo were never seriously threatened in their match that lasted for about two hours. “We were there in the first singles and that gave us the sign that we are capable of winning both the reverse singles," added Lhuillier. - RCJ, GMANews.TV
