Coast Guard: Cargo vessel runs aground off Batangas

A cargo vessel carrying plywood was damaged after it ran aground off Batangas province while on its way from Davao to Manila Sunday night. Radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported Monday the Philippine Coast Guard sent a search-and-rescue team to assist some 24 crewmembers of the cargo vessel "MV Hummer H-1." An initial report reaching the Coast Guard headquarters in Manila showed the incident occurred at about 10 p.m. Sunday about 0.5 nautical mile west of Calatagan inlet. The vessel, skippered by one Marcelino Medado, reportedly sustained damage in the starboard and port bows. Accoring to the Coast Guard, the 1,400-ton vessel was heading for Manila Port from Davao, carrying some 1,119 crates of plywood. Coast Guard commandant Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo deployed a Coast Guard search-and-rescue vessel to the site. Tamayo also ordered the team to be on alert for possible oil slick caused by the incident. — RSJ
