10 hurt as demolition standoff in QC gets more violent

(Updated 2 p.m.) At least 10 people were reported injured in the standoff stemming from the demolition of a residential area in North Triangle in Quezon City on Thursday. Radio dzBB reported the injured included five Quezon City police personnel, one member of the demolition team and two civilians. Three of the injured were rushed to the nearby Veterans Memorial Medical Center due to the extent of their injuries. Senior Superintendent Benjamin Magalong of the Quezon City police said they called for reinforcements but added that police teams could not get to the site immediately because of the heavy traffic in the area.

The police at the site were armed only with truncheons and were forced to get out of the way as residents threw rocks at them. Meanwhile, motorists and commuters along a portion of Epifanio delos Santos Avenue ended up as victims in a standoff between the residents and the demolition team. Residents affected by the demolition at the North Triangle area occupied a part of EDSA's northbound lane. The residents, who held a vigil Wednesday night, hurled rocks earlier Thursday at the demolition team and the police team accompanying it. According to the dzBB report, the standoff affected traffic as far as the Cubao area. Many bus drivers took alternate routes in a bid to avoid the traffic jam. — RSJ/VVP, GMANews.TV
