4 quakes rock RP; no damage reported


At least four quakes rocked Mindanao, Central Luzon, Bicol and the Visayas on Sunday, but no casualty or damage to property was initially reported. In Mindanao, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said a magnitude-5.3 quake rocked the area near General Santos City at 1:33 p.m. USGS said the epicenter was 105 km east-southeast of General Santos, 150 km south-southeast of Davao, 1,125 km south-southeast of Manila, or 2,505 km east-northeast of Jakarta, Indonesia. In Eastern Visayas, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said a magnitude-3.3 quake rocked Southern Leyte province at 1:49 a.m. It said the quake was tectonic, and its epicenter was traced to 47 km northeast of Maasin (Southern Leyte). Another predawn quake rocked the Sorsogon area in Bicol at 3:24 a.m., with Phivolcs tracing the epicenter to 55 km northeast of Prieto Diaz town in Sorsogon. It said the quake was tectonic and measured magnitude 3.8. On the other hand, a magnitude-3.1 quake rocked the Zambales area in Central Luzon at 7:30 a.m. Phivolcs said the quake was tectonic, and its epicenter was traced to 41 km southwest of Iba town in Zambales. No aftershocks were to be expected from the quakes in Luzon and Visayas, Phivolcs said. - KBK, GMANews.TV
