Almost half of cybercrimes in RP unresolved -report

According to a recent survey by Symantec Philippines, up to 47 percent of respondents said that their cases were never resolved. Also, a majority of respondents (73 percent) have resigned themselves to the idea that "cybercriminals will NOT be brought to justice." According to the Norton Cybercrime Report: The Human Impact, an independent representative survey of Filipino adults aged 18 and above conducted last April showed that 87 percent of respondents had experienced some form of cybercrime. The survey also showed that it took an average of 28 days -about a month- to resolve cybercrimes, at a cost of US$273 (PhP12,203) to the victim. The top three most common cybercrimes, according to the Philippine Norton Cybercrime Report, are computer viruses and malware infections (68 percent); online scams (36 percent); and phishing (19 percent). In a report yesterday on 24 Oras, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) admitted that existing Philippine jurisprudence is insufficient to bring cybercriminals to justice. "The current laws aren't even able to address the threats of data theft, data piracy, and online child pornography," said NBI supervising agent Martini Cruz.
