Phivolcs: Magnitude-5.6 quake rocks Batanes


A magnitude-5.6 quake rocked Batanes province in extreme northern Luzon late Thursday afternoon, even as state seismologist warned of possible aftershocks. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake was recorded at 5 p.m., with the epicenter at 91 km southwest of Basco town. It said the quake was tectonic in origin, and felt at Intensity III in Basco, Batanes; Calayan Island, Cagayan; Aparri, Cagayan; and Camalaniugan in Cagayan. Phivolcs, however, said there was no initial report of damage or casualty. Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey said the quake's epicenter was 95 km southwest of Basco, Batanes; 195 km north-northeast of Laoag (Ilocos Norte); 570 km north of Manila; or 585 km south of Taipei, Taiwan. — RSJ, GMANews.TV
