Phivolcs: Predawn quakes rock Mindanao, north Luzon


A magnitude-5.2 quake rocked Sultan Kudarat province in Mindanao before dawn Thursday, state seismologists said even at they warned of possible aftershocks. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake was recorded at 5:58 a.m., with the epicenter traced to 19 km northeast of Isulan, Sultan Kudarat. Phivolcs said the quake was tectonic and was felt at Intensity IV in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat; and in Matan-ao, Davao del Sur. The quake was felt at Intensity III in Kidapawan City; Kabacan, North Cotabato; Malita, Davao del Sur; Tulunan, North Cotabato; Pigcawayan, North Cotabato; Sta Cruz, Davao del Sur; Padada Davao del Sur; Tacurong City; Matalam, North Cotabato; and Makilala in North Cotabato. It was felt at Intensity II in Davao City; General Santos City; Koronadal in South Cotabato; and Digos City. No damage was initially reported. The United States Geological Survey recorded the quake at magnitude 5.2, with the epicenter at 65 km north-northwest of General Santos City; 95 km west-southwest of Davao; 95 km southeast of Cotabato; or 975 km south-southeast of Manila. Meanwhile, Phivolcs said a magnitude-3.2 quake rocked San Fernando in La Union in Ilocos region in northern Luzon at 2:10 a.m. It said no damage was recorded, and no aftershock was expected.— LBG, GMANews.TV
