Subpoena suspected jueteng operators — former Bishop Cruz

Senators should not only invite but subpoena suspected operators of the illegal but popular numbers game jueteng during the next Senate hearing, according to retired Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz. “An invitation is not enough. They should be subpoenaed," Cruz said in an article posted on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines news site. The Senate had earlier invited at least 24 personalities tagged as jueteng lords and protectors but none of them showed up to explain their side. Invited to the hearing were those whom Cruz linked to the illegal numbers game, such as Pampanga Gov. Lilia “Baby" Pineda and Paul Dy of Isabela. Also invited were personalities tagged by Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago as jueteng operators, including Pineda’s husband Rodolfo “Bong" Pineda and Charlie “Atong" Ang. Cruz said not showing in the hearing was simply an admission of guilt. “Silence is admission." — JE/VS, GMANews.TV
