Coast Guard: 274 people stranded due to 'Juan'


At least 274 people were stranded in major ports in Luzon Monday as super typhoon Juan's (international name: Megi) strong winds caused big waves, making sea travel dangerous. Radio dzBB's Allan Gatus cited reports from Coast Guard spokesman Cmdr. Armand Balilo that several seagoing vessels were barred from leaving port. The stranded persons included:

  • 180 people in Batangas Port;
  • 33 people at the Puerto Real port in Quezon, and
  • 51 people at Santa Ana in Isabela province. Several areas in Southern Luzon were placed under Storm Signal No. 1 while Isabela was among the areas placed under Storm Signal No. 4. Meanwhile, at least 26 vessels and 47 motor bancas were barred from leaving port due to typhoon "Juan." "Juan" made landfall in Northern Luzon shortly before noon Monday. The typhoon is expected to exit the country from the Ilocos Sur and La Union areas tomorrow morning. –VVP, GMANews.TV
