Phivolcs: Quakes rock Aurora, General Santos

A magnitude-4.8 quake rocked Aurora province in Luzon Thursday night, but state seismologists said there was no initial report of damage or casualty. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake — which was felt in some parts of Metro Manila — was recorded at 8:46 p.m., with the epicenter traced to 93 km southeast of Baler, Aurora. It said the quake was tectonic and was felt at Intensity III in Daet, Camarines Norte and Alabat, Quezon; and at Intensity II in Pasay City, Quezon City, Alabang in Muntinlupa, and in Tagkawayan, Quezon and Guinayangan, Quezon. No aftershock was expected from Thursday night’s quake, Phivolcs said. The United States Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was 125 km north of San Pedro, Laguna; 160 km east southeast of Cabanatuan in Nueva Ecija; 160 km east northeast of Manila; or 185 km north northwest of Naga in the Bicol Region. Meanwhile, a magnitude-5 quake rocked parts of Mindanao Thursday afternoon but Phivolcs said there was no report of casualty or damage. Phivolcs said the quake was recorded at 3:03 p.m., with the epicenter 195 km southwest of General Santos City. It said the quake was tectonic in origin, adding it does not expect any aftershock. — RSJ, GMANews.TV
